Project Update – Behind the Scenes: Preparing XV232 for the Journey to Manston

While much of the focus is understandably on the eventual move to the RAF Manston History Museum, a huge amount of work is taking place behind the scenes to prepare XV232 for safe dismantling, transportation and reassembly.

Our volunteer engineers and project team are currently progressing a range of technical preparation activities designed to reduce risk, improve safety and help control project costs as we move towards the next phase of the relocation programme.

Current work includes:

🔧 Planning jacking arrangements and specialist support equipment requirements.

✈️ Preparing for the careful removal of engines and associated components.

⚡ Recovering, inspecting and assessing ground power equipment needed to support future preservation activities.

📦 Developing plans for the storage, protection and transportation of aircraft components.

🛠️ Reviewing bomb door securing arrangements and other aircraft movement preparations.

Every task completed now helps ensure that the dismantling and transport phases can be carried out as efficiently and safely as possible. Thorough preparation reduces the likelihood of delays, prevents damage to irreplaceable components and helps minimise overall project costs.

The relocation of XV232 is one of the most significant preservation projects ever undertaken for a surviving Nimrod aircraft, and every step brings us closer to securing her long-term future at Manston.
