Technical Update – Why Moving XV232 Takes Time: The Care Behind XV232.

One of the questions we’re often asked is, “Why does moving XV232 take so long?” The simple answer is that every task depends on another.

XV232 was fortunate to be one of the last Nimrods to undergo a major servicing programme before the fleet was withdrawn from service. Following that work, she flew to Coventry under her own power, arriving as one of the best-preserved and most complete Nimrods available.

That high standard of maintenance has worked to our advantage throughout the preservation project. Regular care by our volunteer team since arriving at Coventry has helped maintain that condition.

However, our current project involves a completely different level of engineering. Many of the procedures now being planned—such as removing the engines, dismantling major assemblies and preparing the aircraft for transport—have not been carried out since XV232 was in RAF service. Every stage therefore requires careful planning, specialist knowledge and the correct equipment before work can begin.

This project isn’t simply about dismantling an aircraft—it’s about preserving XV232 safely and professionally while protecting both the aircraft and the people working on it.
